Intercultural competences

Short description:

The world of work, but also our entire lives, are influenced to a great extent by economic, technological, but above all social changes. Migration, inclusion and gender issues in particular play a central role here. In addition, there are the challenges of a VUKA world, with its components of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambivalence, which must be mastered. All of this leads to cultural diversity, whereby the concept of culture has long since ceased to refer only to the contrastive consideration of countries or nations. Rather, it also includes the diverse cultural lifestyles and patterns of action that result above all from the processes of change mentioned above. Thus, cultures are no longer understood as static, self-contained systems on the basis of which individuals or groups can be assigned and thereby attributed certain values, norms and behaviours. Rather, culture is understood as a dynamic, situational entity to which individuals or groups assign themselves. Moreover, culture emerges as a product of mutual processes of interpretation and negotiation about values, norms, patterns of life and action that are shared to varying degrees by its members. For educational institutions, it is important on the one hand that all learners are equally valued and not discriminated against, and on the other hand that learners and teachers are enabled to carry out such processes of interpretation and negotiation in order to be able to deal competently with cultural diversity.
